Thomas MAOS

Thomas Maos was born in 1964 in Stuttgart / Germany.

Since 1984 he has lived in Tübingen / Stuttgart with his wife Birgit and his sons Valentin and Rafael. After studying psychology in 1990 he started to work as a composer for theatre music, pop-rock music and experimental music. He teaches guitar and conducts projects with scholars and students. Thomas Maos is a kind of „crossover artist“, performing projects together with visual artists, writers, dancers and musicians for the past 20 years.

While his provenance is half Greek and half German, in the last years his work has gotten more and more influenced by elements of eastern folk.
The first step into a career as a professional musician was his major label deal at BMG-Ariola with his rock band DEAD POETS during the years of 1990-1996, where the band performed over 800 shows in the whole of Europe. During that time, Thomas Maos started to organize the „NIET“,  a Werkstattbühne (workshop platform) for free improvised and experimental music with guests from all over the world. For these performances he developed his „electronic guitar“ where he creates abstract and tonal electronic sound fields. During the scholarships of 2003 (Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg) and 2008 (Schloß Solitude Stuttgart) 2 solo-albums were released:

chill in drill out / nurnichtnur LC 05245 with solo pieces for electronic guitar and Silent artOrchestra / fastball, sony with compositions for dobro and electronics.
As an extrapolation of NIET together with Fried Dähn Thomas Maos founded the CAMP-festival for Klangkunst and visual arts. The particularity of CAMP is that the invited artists work and live together for about one week with elaborating and performing projects in a sense of „work in process“.

Ever since then, the CAMP-festival took place every other year at different locations with artists from all over the world and it became one of the most innovative festivals of audio-visual art in Europe. In 2010, CAMP is invited by the Goethe-Institut of Zagreb to  perform a festival in Croatia.

Since 1997, Thomas Maos is involved in the production of plays at different theatres like the LTT Landestheater Tübingen, Theater Heilbronn, Staatstheater Stuttgart, Theater Lindenhof and Zimmertheater Tübingen. In 2002 he got the „German Theaterpreis“ for the piece „Sag doch was“ , where he played guitar and talkbox as an alternate for the voice of an old man, who lost his ability to talk.
