ULRICH MITZLAFF completed his
studies of violoncello in the 70ties, in Tübingen, with
the professor Stefan Zarnescú. After his studies he was
playing with the Studentenphilharmonie of the University
of Tübingen. Since 1996 he is living at Lisbon, Portugal,
where he is working as a composer and cello player of contemporary,
experimental and improvised music, free jazz and sound-art.
He participated in many international festivals for new music:
Ciclo de Nova Música Portuguesa (Lisbon,
1999), Ó da Guarda (Guarda, 1999), Emergências
(Lisbon, 2000), Encontros de Música Experimental
(Setúbal, 2000 and 2001), O Gesto Orelhudo
(Âgueda, 2001), Esta 2001 (Estarreja, 2003),
Fazer a Festa (Porto, 2003), CAMP 03
(Tübingen, Germany, 2003) international festival for electronic
music, sound art and visual arts, Jazzolograma (Lisbon,
2004), Multiplismos (Lisbon, 2005) and Palavras
Desencarnadas II (Lisbon, 2005) and Sonorities
festival of contemporary music (Belfast, Nothern Ireland,
2005.
In 2004 he was invited by the portuguese choreographer Rui Horta
to participate at the artistic residency COLINA 2004 at the
Centro Coreográfico in Montemor-o-Novo (Portugal).
He was interpreting the original music composed by Nuno Rebelo
in 2001 for como rebolar alegremente sobre um vazio interior,
choreography by Vera Mantero for the Ballet Gulbenkian, and
in 2003 for Silicone Não, choreography by
Paulo Ribeiro for the Companhia Paulo Ribeiro. He participated
in the compact-disconcert by Nuno Rebelo and in
the multi-dimensional piece
como um relâmpago
by Américo Rodrigues.
Beside various projects of improvised and experimental music
he recently has been collaborating with the dancers Jane Mason,
Marta Cerqueira, Hillell Kogan, Paula Pinto, Vitor Garcia, Manuel
Silva, António Cabrita, Helena Lourenço, Isabel
Souto, Constança Couto, Luís Guerra and others.
He was playing in various concerts with Nuno Rebelo, Vera Mantero,
Carlos Zingaro, Fried Dähn, Rodrigo Amado, Américo
Rodrigues, Vitor Joaquim, Miguel Leiria Pereira, Franziska Schröder,
Pedro Rebelo, José Tavares, Marco Franco, Carlos Bechegas,
Gregg Moore, Liba Villavecchia, Paulo Curado, Joachim Glasstetter,
Jürgen Grözinger, Carlos Santos, Emídio Buchinho,
Mark Whitecage, Stefano de Bonis, Josep-Maria Balanyà,
Alfredo Costa Monteiro and others. He worked in the duo I/O
with Carlos Santos (MAX/MSP) in the field of the electro-acoustic
improvisation and he has collaborated with the formations VITRIOL
of Carlos Santos and Paulo Raposo and LIP (Lisbon Improvisation
Players) of Rodrigo Amado.
