CAMP festival for visual music

(english version / englische Version)

How to combine music and image with each other? Beyond commercial music videos and wallpaper-like video projections in clubs? CAMP tries to answer as venture capital- with a venture as capital. Twelf musicians and six video artists from Japan, USA, Mexiko, The Netherlands, Italy and Germany meet one week to work and live together in the rooms of the Württembergischen Kunstverein. They neither know each other, nor do they know the rooms. The unique CAMP recipe is about to follow: Time for exchange, the tonal and visual take-over of these spaces in a creative process, which is based on the idea of the experiment. Meaning risk and freedom are central parts of the process. Freedom, not only from a conventional way of working and comercial strucutures, but also freedom for failure – something which may be the basis for the next breakthrough ...

For the sake of the experiment CAMP (Creative Arts and Music Project) uses a special event format, developed only for that festival. Communication, taking over space, improvization and presentation – elements building up on each other. The results of the one week experiment will officially be presented in Württembergischen Kunstverein in Stuttgart, on 18th and 19th of August. Renowned musicians as Prof. Masayuki Akamatsu (Japan) and Ricardo Caballero (Mexico) as well as visual artists, as Kasumi (USA), VJ Oxygen (the Netherlands) und Philipp Geist (Germany).

Since 1999 the festival, with its innovative and international orientation, has been conceputalized and realized by Prof. Friedemann Dähn und Thomas Maos. Since 2004 together with Stefan Hartmaier and Martin Mangold. The festival is a laboratory for sound-artists and musicians as well as artists of the realms of video, installation, projection and new media. In a „laboratory of time“, the artists work on new experimental music in convergence with new visual forms of presentation. Analogous, as well as digital, unplugged and electronic.

The exchange included in the event format, the cooperation of artists of different origins and ways of education is not only a side-effect, but one central association of the festival-concept. Thus, artistic and cultural impulses are set free, conglomerating in an enormous creative potential.

Former CAMP festivals have already shown. CAMP 1999 in Sudhaus, Tübingen, CAMP 03 in Gewerbepark Karl Schirm in Kirchentellinsfurt, CAMP 05/1 in O Espaco do Tempo, Montemor (Portugal) und CAMP 05/2 in Stuttgarter Wagenhallen have proved that this concept works and puts forth innovative results. Public and press were impressed by the creative power of concerts and performances.

CAMP 05/2 puts his major focus on Visual Music: electronic music in combination with real-time projections, live-video and interactive light-design. With CAMPs present edition this approach is to be continued in Stuttgart. Since renaissance, it was attempted to bring together in unison music and visual accompaniment - barely with lasting success. Only in film as time-art, one recognized an adequate visual partner to music. Music-visualiziations of Oskar Fischinger or Len Lye present it in an impressive way. The terminology of film has also been shifted by the new, digital Media. As „Digital Cinema“ (Lev Manovich), it includes all digital visual forms, grounding on time, mainly live and mixed image-sequences produced in real-time, so-called visuals. Since 1999 already, with the beginning of the CAMP festival, these new forms of visuals were attempted to combine with music, and it seems only consequent to amplify this orientation now, in a time of Visual Music becoming more and more topic of great exhibitions, such as „Visual Music“ in MOCA, Los Angeles (2005) and research of new audiovisual forms is done, worldwide.

With the present edition of CAMP academic presentations, in form of discussions, lectures as well as workshops for young people and students are offered and included in the program.

Becoming works at CAMP are accompanied reflexively. It is a perfect possibility for young people and students to get to know and use innovative techniques as a basis. The learning of software-determined processes and their artistic use represent the center.

Lecutres and workshops shall communicate working processes and their results to a larger public. Through the extensions of internationality as well as lectures and workshops, the CAMP festival aims at becoming a leading experimental festival for Visual Music.
