António Jorge Gonçalves
António Jorge Gonçalves was born in Lisbon.
Author of Graphic Novels published and exhibited in Portugal, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, France, Macao, Mexico, Spain, South Korea and the United Kingdom. He has designed sets for the theatre, working with various directors. Using the technique of Live Digital Drawing and manipulating objects on an Overhead Projector, he has taken part in many performances with musicians, actors and dancers in Portugal, France, Germany, USA and Japan. He created the Subway Life project, drawing people sitting on the Subway. He draws a weekly political cartoon for Público newspaper, having also been published in Le Monde and Courrier Internacional and was recognised with a World Press Cartoon award. He won the National Illustration Award 2014.
He graduated in Graphic Design in Lisbon (Escola Superior de Belas-Artes) and, having won a scholarship from Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, he completed his Master’s degree in Theatre Design in London (Slade School of Fine Art_UCL). He lectured on Performing Spaces on the Master’s Degree Performing Arts Course (FSCH, Lisbon) and is currently teaching at Faculdade de Belas-Artes/Lisbon.
