born 1972
Works with organizing sound within a conceptual and physical framework and with a focus on force and energy. This approach which draws on mulitple references to both music and visual art is evident in all of Tobias Kirstein’s works whether it is sound installation, radio soundpiece, scores for various emsembles or free form settings. He works with a diverse range of material, from computer created sinus tones and tone generators to the sound of the raw power of electricity in open tape recorders and beyond that he plays noise guitar and drums (or the aluminium ladder as shown on the photo above). Working with sound and music as a organising energy Kirstein’s drumming escapes orthodoxy, e.i. is freed from the traditional parameters of the beat, and becomes an expression of brute force. His sound installations are based on interferences between sinus tones and uses the power of volume as a way to ‘energize’ the room.
